Meredith Waters New Senator

Meredith Waters (GEB 2009) was elected Freshman Senator to the GW Student Association. As Senator, Meredith represents the freshmen, acts as a liaison for students and communicates their needs and concerns to the Association and the Administration. There are three senators for the freshman class, Meredith is the only one from WLP and from the Mount Vernon Campus.

WLP students win Eckles Prize

The Eckles Prize for Freshman Research Excellence recognizes students who produce a research project in their freshman year that demonstrates significant and meaningful use of library services and collections at the George Washington University. Projects are not limited to a specific length or format. All entries will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

• Superior depth or breadth in the use of library collections including, but not limited to: printed resources, databases, primary resources, and materials in all media

• Exceptional ability to locate, select, evaluate, and synthesize library resources and to use them in the creation of a project in any media

• Evidence of significant personal learning and the development of a habit of research and inquiry that shows potential for future application

• Clear and effective communication of ideas

This year’s winners include two WLP students from 2009-2010:

1st place: Kirsten Ortega, “Framing Homosexuality: Media Influence in Reconciling the film Brokeback Mountain within the limits of a Hetero-normative Society.” (sponsoring faculty is Rachel Riedner, UWP)

2nd place: Art & Culture cohort student: Gretchen Gasteier, “Why Don’t We Hear From the Women?: The Female Voice in Public Settings.” (sponsoring faculty is Andrea Levine, WLP)

3rd place: Science, Health and Medicine cohort student: Caroline Freitag, “The Real World: Opening a social dialogue through stereotypical casting.” (sponsoring faculty is Andrea Levine, WLP)

Former WLP GTAs awarded fellowships and scholarships

Becky Reindel, former GTA in Science, Health and Medicine, has been awarded a fellowship by the Association of the Schools of Public Health (ASPH). As an environmental health fellow, Becky will be working at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to raise public awareness about radon, a gas found in homes and schools and the #1 cause of lung cancer for non-smokers. She begins her fellowship September 1st.

Gaby Wyatt, former GTA in Art and Culture, has been awarded a scholarship to begin her doctoral program in English at Berkeley, with a concentration in Renaissance/EarlyModern literature.

Karen Ramsey Miranda, former GTA in US and International Politics, is the recipient of a teaching fellowship in the Political Science department at The George Washington University.

Noted author to speak at Women's Leadership Program

Joanne Rendell, author of The Professors' Wives' Club and Crossing Washington Square and contributor to The Huffington Post, will be in residence for a Women's Leadership Pressentation presentation on September 21st at 7 pm in Post Hall. Joanne will be reading from her new book concerning a conversation between Virginia Woolf and Sylvia Plath. Becky Reindel, GTA for the Science, Health and Medicine (2006-2009) cohort wins top prize

Becky took part in the summer 2008 internship program at Occupational Health Internship Program and the Association of Occupational and Environmental Clinics, advocating for the health and safety of New York Citys taxi drivers. "We were looking at how the design of any taxi vehicle affects drivers health," said Reindel, noting that the majority of New York City's taxi drivers lease their vehicles and are not permitted to make adjustments to the seats.

Four Science, Health, and Medicine alums elected to Phi Beta Kappa

Samantha Ahle, Carolyn McGann, Jessica Penney, and Tiffany Wong (SHM 2006-2007) were recently elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Congratulations!

New Book by Lee Ann Fujii, faculty member in US and International Politics

WLP's Lee Ann Fujii's new book Killing neighbors: Webs of violence in Rwanda has just been released by Cornell University Press. The book examines rural violence during the 1994 Rwandan genocide in two small communities.

Jenna Marie Armijo Kloeppel Awarded Fulbright

Jenna Kloeppel (Art and Culture 2005-06) was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship for the academic year 2008-2009!

Alpana Gowdar's New Position

Congratulations to Alpana Gowdar (SHM '06-07) on her selection for a position at the Unversity Writing Center.

Women as Global Leaders Conference Delegation

Rupal Doshi Accepted to Georgetown Law School

Congratulations to Rupal Doshi (Former WLP in US and International Politics) Rupal writes: I wanted to update you on my application status. As you know, I applied to Georgetown Law School under early decision. When I returned from break, I had a small manila envelope awaiting me bearing great news. I was accepted to the law school and I'll definitely be enrolling there next fall! (10/29/05)

Angela Chang Chosen For Young People For Fellowship

Congratulations to Angela Chang, member of the 2004-05 US and International Politics cohort of the WLP. She has been chosen to be one of 120 students to received a Young People For Fellowship.

Fellows will learn skills and strategies to become more effective leaders. The fellowship will help todays rising progressive leaders to accomplish their goals and make a difference on their campuses, in the community and across the nation. The fellowship begins with a three-and-a-half day summit from January 14-17, 2005 in Washington, D.C. with trainings on how to:

  • Develop progressive networks and coalitions
  • Learn effective messaging techniques
  • Use the Media to get your message out
  • Improve your campus and community organizing skills

Following the January summit, fellows will have the opportunity to organize an action campaign around an issue they care about.
