Rhys Chambers is an analyst for The Socially Responsible Investment Fund (SRIF), which entails basic research on the various companies and learning about our current portfolio. The SRIF is a group that analyzes companies in the stock market in order to find investment opportunities that are both financially sound and ethically responsible in their ESG (Environment, Social, Governance).
Chambers recalls how she was honestly a little nervous to attend the information session because she knew that she would be one of the only girls in the room. She also wasn’t sure how welcoming anyone would be, especially since she was a freshman who does not have extensive knowledge or experience with finance work. Despite this, she really enjoyed the first real general body meeting. Chambers had to complete an interview in order to be a member, so she was really excited to have made it into the fund. Chambers stated, “During the first meeting we discussed many topics that were over my head, but I was really excited to get started and meet everyone and they were all super nice and welcoming”.
She evaluates how over the past couple months in the club, she has improved her presentation skills and learned a lot about investing. Coming back to life after COVID-19, she speculates that many individuals forgot how to stand up in front of a group of real people and give a presentation. However, Chambers says that it has been fun to get back into the swing of presenting and answering questions on the spot. Everyone in the fund has been very supportive and always willing to answer any questions she has..
Rhys would recommend this club to anyone who is interested in investing, especially in a way that is socially responsible and focused on the greater good. It is definitely a club that involves independent research, but it’s worth it if you enjoy a more hands-on approach to learning about the market!
