Alumni Advisory Council
Mission Statement
The Elizabeth J. Somers Women’s Leadership Program Alumni Advisory Council fosters a dynamic community among WLP alumnae. The Advisory Council provides guidance on alumni engagement, mentorship, philanthropy, and other evolving priorities to support the program’s ongoing growth and impact.
Members convene four times per year, providing guidance to uphold and enhance this program's legacy. Learn more about the Advisory Council's strategic priorities below.
Vision
To achieve our purpose, the Advisory Council set three strategic priorities:
- Alumni Engagement: Understanding how alumnae want to engage with the program and each other, with a focus on creating opportunities for meaningful involvement that benefit both the WLP community and individual alumnae.
- Philanthropy: Expanding program initiatives, improving post-grad resources, and further cultivating a support system between student and alumnae by increasing philanthropic support among alumnae.
- Mentorship: Build on the success of the established mentorship program to strengthen connections between alumnae and current WLP participants.
Current Members
Kalpana Vissa, Chair
Kalpana Vissa, B.S. ’18, M.P.H. ’20, is a special assistant at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General (HHS-OIG). Vissa advises senior leadership on organizational operations, strategic planning and cross-component initiatives to fight fraud, waste and abuse in order to improve HHS programs and the people they serve. Outside of her role at HHS-OIG, Vissa holds an adjunct faculty position in GW’s School of Medicine and Health Sciences, developing and teaching undergraduate public health and health sciences courses. Vissa is a member of the GW Alumni Association Executive Committee. She also serves as the Chair of the GW Women’s Leadership Program Alumni Advisory Council and volunteers for the Title IX Office. Vissa was selected to pursue her master’s degree as a Presidential Fellow, where she also was a member of the Safety and Security Advisory Board, Board of Trustees Volunteer Engagement Taskforce and Committee on Sexual Assault Prevention and Response.
Joyce King
Joyce King is Chief Counsel at the Frederick County State’s Attorney’s Office. She is the Chief Prosecutor of the Frederick County Cybercrimes Taskforce and serves on the Maryland Internet Crimes Against Children Taskforce. Ms. King is a board member for the National District Attorneys Association Digital Safety Advisory Board to combat online abuse, digital scams, human trafficking, and other technology related issues that impact public safety. She completed specialized Digital Evidence Training with the United States Secret Service National Computer Forensics Institute and is cross-designated as a Special Assistant United States Attorney for the Department of Justice Project Safe Childhood.
In addition to prosecution, Ms. King manages operations and communications of the State’s Attorney’s Office, serves on the Legislative Committee for the Maryland State’s Attorney Association, and provides legal counsel for multi-agency criminal justice policy initiatives and projects. Specifically, Ms. King is passionate about Problem Solving Courts and Diversion Program initiatives to fight crime while addressing addiction and mental health in the criminal justice system. She currents serves on the Frederick County Drug Treatment Court Team and Frederick County Overdose Fatality Review Team. Ms. King is an alumni of George Washington University, American University: Women & Politics Institute, and the David A. Clarke School of Law.
Lindsay Vogel
Lindsay Vogel is the Lead Privacy Counsel at Bumble, where she focuses on ensuring privacy compliance and privacy protective features are at the forefront of the Company’s six global apps. Prior to joining Bumble, Lindsay served as the Senior Director of Privacy Compliance at the Department of Homeland Security and Senior Privacy Strategist at the FDIC. Lindsay received her J.D. from the George Mason University School of Law. Both Lindsay and her husband Josh are proud GW graduates.
Kayla Yvonne Laws
Kayla Yvonne Laws graduated Cum Laude from The George Washington University in May 2024, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with a double major in Honors English and Africana studies, minor in Journalism and Mass Communications. Kayla is also a 2020 year graduate of The George Washington University’s Women’s Leadership Program (WLP) and previously served on the WLP Student Advisory Board throughout her tenure at the University. She is currently an English and reading instructor with the Institute of Reading Development where she instructs kindergarten through college students on proficiency in English language comprehension strategies. Kayla held many leadership positions at GW to include serving as president of the GW Chapters of the National Association of Black Journalists and the NAACP, board member of the GW Hatchet newspaper and team leader with GW's Nashman Center's esteemed Civic Changemakers" initiative program. Kayla is in the process of applying to PhD programs in English and African American History studies.
Dominika Bukalova
Dominika Bukalova is an assistant professor in the School of Public Affairs at San Diego State University. Her research interests include leadership development and local government administration. Prior to joining the faculty, Dominika worked in local government, where her experience included serving as Chief of Staff to the San Diego City Council President. A certified leadership coach, Dominika has worked with private and public sector clients to provide strategic planning and leadership development services, which also informs her approach to research, teaching, and student mentoring. Dominika earned her Ph.D. in leadership studies at the University of San Diego. She is a graduate of San Diego State University (M.A. in Political Science) and The George Washington University (B.A. in Political Science and International Affairs), where she participated in the Elizabeth J. Somers Women’s Leadership Program.
Rinella Casseus
Rinella is a Haitian-American first generation student class of 2024. She double Majored in Public Health and Business Administration and attended the BS/MPH dual degree track in undergraduate school at GW. She is currently completing the MPH in the Biostatistics track/major and hopes to use her degree to provide statistical data and analysis to policymakers to eliminate health disparities amongst disadvantaged populations.
Marissa Young
Marissa Young is a public health professional working in the field of healthcare marketing. She specializes in rare disease portfolios and providing access, affordability, and support for patients and their caregivers. Marissa received an MPH from Columbia University, where her graduate studies focused on health policy and management and health communication. She is a certified health education specialist (CHES) and has expertise in applying health behavior change frameworks to create effective health communication campaigns. Marissa received her B.S. in Public Health from George Washington University in 2016 and was part of the WLP Science, Health, and Medicine cohort from 2012-2013.
Nicole Rogers
Nicole Rogers is the Co-founder and CMO at ai12z, where she leads marketing and operations. Prior to ai12z, she worked in marketing positions at Google, Box, WeWork, Matterport, and Ektron. Her experience includes establishing and scaling programs from their start to success, managing team operations, and leading go-to-market initiatives to increase awareness and drive revenue. Nicole graduated Summa Cum Laude from The George Washington University in 2009, where she earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree with a double concentration in International Business and Marketing.
