Alumnae Update: Summer 2015, Part 1

May 12, 2015

Alexandra Murray

We received so many alumnae updates recently! This round of updates feature students who are currently at GW. Please email us if you want to share your update - we would love to hear from you!

Alexandra Murray (GEB 2013-14) wrote to tell us about her life at GW:
This semester, some other WLP alumnae and I started a new student organization at GW. Me, Kenzie Dart (IAC 2013-2014), Rebecca Galanti (IP 2013-2014), Alaina Noronha (SHM 2012-2013), and Renee Underhill founded GW’s branch of Women and Youth Supporting Each Other (WYSE.org) and we have several other WLP alumnae participating in the program.
This summer, I will be studying at the London School of Economics. For the fall semester, I’ll be studying on an exchange at the Vienna University of Economics and Business.

Darby Gould (IP 2013-14) wrote to us about her experience with affinity housing and study abroad:

During the fall 2014 semester, I was accepted into the Global Connections Residential Community (GCRC). This is a student organization through an affinity housing arrangement (floors 3-5 in Philip Amsterdam Hall). Everyone in the program was accepted based on their want to learn about other students' cultures and heritages. I am happy to say that my peers elected me president of the GCRC executive board. I spent the semester working with the other e-board members planning various activities for the GCRC students (ice-cream socials, Embassy Row trick-or-treating, pot luck dinners, ice-skating, etc.) in order to work to fulfill our goal of learning more about each other's cultural traditions.

This past semester I spent traveling Europe for my study abroad. The point of the program was full immersion in learning about the political science behind the European Union through a multitude of lens (political cultures, regions, sustainability, and institutions). This program included traveling to a many different countries within the European Union to gain first hand experience and to hear lectures from government officials of the member states. A few of the countries I have traveled to in these past months include: Germany, Belgium, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria, and the Czech Republic.

This summer I was accepted into a living and learning program in Berlin, Germany. I will spend the first month in an intensive German language learning course and then the next two months I will spend interning for an international law department focusing on real estate and patent law- two fields of law that I am greatly interested in continuing my work in. (Also thanks to WLP professor, Professor Salchack, whose recommendation letter helped me gain acceptance into the program!)

Jocelyn Jacoby (IP 2013-14) wrote us to say:

Kirsten Dimovitz (IP 2013-14) and I were both interns at the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) DC Liaison Office interns for Spring 2015.

This is a picture of us (Kirsten second to left, me third from left) with the UNFPA team, both stationed in DC and those who were visiting.
I will be studying abroad at Queen Mary University of London for Fall 2015. Kirsten will be studying in Kenya. We hope to return to UNFPA after studying abroad due to the incredible experiences we had. We were able to attend conferences, host events, and took constant visits to the hill.
Nicole Casasanta was a part of SHM cohort from 2012-2013 and has quite a few updates to submit  -  she has been doing a lot since leaving the WLP!
Last summer I was accepted in GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences Early Selection Doctor of Medicine program! I am very excited about my acceptance and I will begin medical school here in the Fall of 2016.
I found out last month that I received the Luther Rice Undergraduate Research Fellowship for a project entitled "Genome Editing of Human Pancreatic Cancer using CRISPR/Cas9 Technology." I will complete the project over the summer in Dr. Tzatsos' lab in the SMHS; I have been working in his laboratory learning research techniques the last two semesters.
This April and last April 2014 I received the Outstanding Academic Achievement Award from GW.
I also hold two Eboard positions next school year as President of Delta Epsilon Mu (pre-health fraternity) and VP of Women's Club Lacrosse. I was treasurer of both organizations this past year and was treasurer for club lacrosse my sophomore year as well.
