Nichelle A. Holmes

Meet Nichelle A. Holmes, a WLP student from 2010-2011.

Life after WLP

Since graduating from WLP I have been elected Vice President of the Mu Beta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., interned in the Advancement Office of Beauvoir Elementary School, President of The GW Black Women’s Forum, Corporate Marketing Intern at Opower, House Staff for the First Year Experience, recognized by the Black Student Union for leadership, recognized by the GW Women in Business for true leadership and dedication to the GW community.

On WLP Academics

I found the WLP program to be challenging academically. Being in small classrooms helped me to stay on top of my assignments and participate more in class. (In a large lecture it may be possible to slip through the cracks, but when your professor is sitting next to you or directly across from you, you learn to do your work and your readings)

On WLP Community
Beyond academics, living in a community of women taught me the importance of getting to know the talents of those who live close to you. Often times we seek help from people outside of our immediate community or the GW community in general before thinking of people we see in everyday passing. The WLP community taught me the importance of learning about people who live close by in order to know when they can help you and for them to know when you can help them. Living in such a small knit community you really begin to appreciate your strengths and the strengths of those around you.

Looking Back
Get to know your peers and your professors. In a school like GW more likely than not your professor won’t take the time to learn your name, and you wont know 1/3 of the students in your class, but it is important to have professors that you know well when you need a recommendation, a faculty advisor, or even a professional opinion. This is a great community in which to build those relationships.
